About SHC

The UNC Charlotte Student Health Center (SHC) provides primary medical care, disease prevention, health education, wellness promotion, and various specialty services to all registered UNC Charlotte students, regardless of the type of health insurance they carry.

The Student Health Center is part of the campus team that coordinates responses to infectious disease outbreaks and is the university's liaison to the Mecklenburg County Health Department. We provide the campus with important public health services.

The Student Health Center building is also the home of the Center for Wellness Promotion (CWP).

The mission of the Student Health Center is to provide comprehensive high-quality healthcare, outreach and health education to students.

We strive to create a welcoming environment in which the uniqueness of each person is recognized and celebrated, and where everyone is treated with compassion and respect. Our mission to provide our students with quality healthcare is demonstrated through our services, practices and health policies. Through ongoing professional development, our staff refine their awareness and competency of bias and inclusion as they pertain to our work. We are accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) which provides standards that support our response to our patient’s individual needs (communication, patient-centered, cultural competency, staff training and quality improvement). The SHC offers a language interpretation service during medical visits, the option to add a Preferred Name in our medical software and Safe Zone trained staff.

The Student Health Center respects the rights of each patient receiving care. The staff also encourages all students to be aware of the responsibilities of receiving medical care at the SHC. Click here for the Patients' Rights and Responsibilities document.

The Notice of Privacy Practices describes how medical information about a patient may be used and disclosed and how to get access to that information. It applies to all patient health information used to make care decisions that the UNC Charlotte generates or maintains. Click here for the Notice or Privacy Practices.

The original Student Health Center opened on March 24, 1971 in the Brocker Health Service building, named in honor of Edith P. Brocker, first dean of UNC Charlotte’s School of Nursing. The growth of the university required a larger building. On October 10, 2007, the new Student Health Center opened. At nearly 32,000 square feet, the new building is almost triple the size of the Brocker building and features 21 medical exam rooms including two negative pressure rooms that can be used to prevent the spread of infectious bacteria. The Brocker building has been renamed Memorial Hall and is home to the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC.

The Student Health Center is accredited by The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, also known as AAAHC. Formed in 1979, it is a leader in ambulatory (out-patient) health care accreditation. Its high standards require the Student Health Center to maintain excellent quality of patient care. AAAHC currently accredits over 4,000 health care organizations including the majority of college health centers that are accredited.

The Student Health Center laboratory is accredited by COLA, the premier clinical laboratory education, consultation, and accreditation organization. COLA accreditation enables clinical laboratories to meet CLIA and other regulatory requirements.
