SERVICES
General Medical Services
Basic medical services include
consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of acute illness or injuries,
such as the common cold, skin conditions, abdominal pain, headaches, asthma,
pneumonia, sexually transmitted infections, and back pain. There is no charge to
see a provider; however, nominal fees for other services may
be charged. For your convenience, appointments are recommended for general
medical visits and are required for specialty clinics and some services.

Sports Medicine/Orthopedic Clinic
Continuing care for
orthopedic injuries and problems that fall beyond the scope of general care.
Referral and appointment are required. Fees may accompany this service.

Gynecology Services
Annual physical and pap smear,
contraception information, sexually transmitted infection testing, and emergency
contraception. Female practitioners are available. Appointment

HIV Screening Services
Free confidential
screening and counseling for HIV provided through the Regional HIV/AIDS
Consortium. Note: test results do not become part of your
academic or medical record. Appointment required.

Immunizations
We provide State-required
immunizations (see link below) and immunizations recommended for health care
majors, such as TB testing and the Hepatitis B series. Call 704-687-7424

Immunizations
Gardasil (HPV vaccine):
protects against 4 major types of HPV.
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the US and
can cause cervical cancer in women.
Hepatitis A:
protects against
this serious liver disease, which is spread by close personal
contact and by eating food or drinking water containing the
virus. Recommended for persons traveling outside the U.S. to
countries with high rates of Hepatitis A.
Hepatitis B:
protects against this serious liver disease, which may result in
liver cancer. Hepatitis B is spread by contact with blood and
bodily fluids.
Hepatitis A/B combination:
protects against
both Hepatitis A and B.
Menactra:
protects against
the most common strains on Meningococcal Meningitis.
Recommended for first-year students living in the residence
halls.
Polio:
protects against this now rare, but highly contagious virus,
spread by contact with contaminated feces or oral secretions.
The virus can cause paralysis of the muscles in the chest, leg
or arms in severe cases.
Pneumoccocal pneumonia:
protects against these strains of pneumonia. Call for
availability.
Influenza/flu:
protects against this acute, contagious respiratory infection.
Offered seasonally.
Allergy Services
Allergy injections are
provided to patients in the build-up or maintenance phases of immunotherapy.
Note: Our policy requires that patients receive the first and second
injection of their first vial of initial build-up in their allergist's office.
Appointment required. Prior to receiving allergy injections at Student Health
Services, please complete the following:
• Obtain an allergy packet from the Immunizations office at Student
Health Services and have necessary forms completed by your allergist;
• Make an appointment at Student Health Services
for an allergy consultation (704-687-7400). To the appointment, please
bring the completed Request for Injection Form, including a written order from
the prescribing allergist, and vials of allergy extracts;
• Read, sign, and agree to comply with the guidelines for receiving
allergy injections.
Travel Clinic
Students planning to
travel or study abroad can receive current travel information and vaccination
recommendations for their specific itinerary. An International Travel
Immunization Record is also available, upon request. Most immunizations
can be provided at a lower cost than you might pay at other community health

Notes:
• Plan to visit the Travel Clinic at least
one month prior to your departure. Some vaccines require advanced planning
to work effectively.
• If students are enrolled in the University student health insurance
plan (www.studentinsurance.com), additional
insurance will not be necessary for travel outside of the U.S.

Pharmacy
Prescriptions, available at
30-60% less than found in many drug stores, are accepted from both in-house
and outside physicians. Prescriptions may be transferred from outside
pharmacies; simply provide our pharmacist with your pharmacy's contact
information by calling 704-687-7431. Many over-the-counter items,
including pain relievers and cough and cold products are available at a
significantly reduced rate.

Physical Therapy
Rehabilitative services for
short-term acute injury care. Many physical therapy/sports medicine clinic
services are free. Physician's order required. Call 704-687-7400 for more

Medical Laboratory Services
Routine diagnostic procedures
are performed in-house or sent to reference laboratories. Orders for lab
work are accepted from both in-house and outside physicians. There is a
fee for lab work performed.
Radiology
Orders for x-ray
examinations are accepted from both in-house and outside physicians. There
is a fee for all x-ray exams. Appointment required.

A registered dietitian
is available for individual student consultations, with particular interest to
those students needing assistance with disordered eating issues or weight loss.

Eating Disorders Screening
Wellness Promotion
Individual, group, and
campus-wide wellness events related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use,
sexual responsibility, nutrition, and men's and women's health issues.
Assessments and other assistance is provided for individuals with questions
about alcohol or other drugs, or who may be experiencing difficulties as a
